Oakland, CA, Full-Time Montessori Preschool

The Montessori Preschool Program at Oak Grove Montessori is offered in three mixed-age classrooms and is designed for children ages 2 through 5. Over the three-year cycle of our open-enrollment program, the growth and development children experience is truly remarkable.

Children are introduced to a wide range of activities—both those that are developmentally appropriate for their current age and those that invite them to stretch, grow, and take on new challenges. Through a modeling and mentoring approach, concepts are presented in ways children can understand, absorb, and apply with confidence.

Montessori-Trained Lead Teachers

Lead teachers in each classroom are Montessori-trained and thoughtfully design the learning environment—offering individual and small-group lessons, observing progress, and providing the right level of support to foster independence.

A Prepared Environment That Helps Children Thrive

Working within a carefully prepared environment allows teachers to move fluidly throughout the classroom—guiding learning, supporting curiosity, and encouraging children to take ownership of their work.

Child engaging with Montessori sensorial and practical life materials

Sensorial & Practical Life Skills

Children are introduced to both Sensorial and Practical Life activities. Practical Life work includes experiences such as sorting, sequencing, spooning, dressing, and other activities commonly found in the home environment.

These activities help children complete a full cycle of work, strengthen hand-eye coordination, carry trays independently to a table or rug, and refine fine-motor skills that prepare them for writing.

Sensorial = The Foundation for Mathematics

Sensorial materials isolate specific qualities—such as length, color, texture, weight, or sound—so children can refine their ability to observe, compare, and discriminate. Once mastered, the materials naturally invite creative extensions and deeper exploration.

Montessori language activities supporting phonetic awareness and early reading

Montessori Preschool Language Program

Language development is supported through phonetic awareness and recognition using a multi-sensory approach that engages sight, sound, and touch. This strengthens understanding and retention in the developing brain.

Over time, children progress from recognizing beginning and ending sounds to building words with pictures and cards, and eventually to early reading.

Language activities also support comprehension skills such as following directions, understanding parts-to-whole relationships, and identifying missing elements.

Montessori math materials supporting concrete to abstract learning

Montessori Preschool Mathematics Program

Mathematics is introduced using the Montessori principle of moving from concrete to abstract. Children begin by learning what numerals represent and how quantity is associated with each numeral.

Using tactile materials and counting objects, children gain a meaningful understanding of numbers. As they progress, they expand number recognition and association skills.

By the end of the preschool cycle, many children are comfortable with simple addition and subtraction, and some explore early multiplication concepts.

Monthly Themes & Whole-Child Learning

Monthly thematic units introduce children to continents, artists, composers, and historical figures—sparking curiosity and delight as children discover the wider world.

At Oak Grove Montessori, educating the whole child goes far beyond academics. We provide a nurturing, balanced environment that supports strong intellectual growth while honoring each child’s emotional and social development.

We recognize that every child’s educational journey is unique, and no two paths will look the same.
